Teak care
Teak does not need to be protected. It is a unique wood that, if left in its natural state, is simply maintenance-free. Teak can be left out all year round, and withstand even the most extreme weather conditions. Therefore, teak, often considered the gold standard for Garden Furniture.
Over time, teak furniture that, untreated and exposed to the sun will break a little silver or gray in color. This process is cosmetic and does not harm the strength or quality of the wood.
Teak sealer
Teak sealant contains UV Protection to prevent the sun from using the furniture, as well as a fungicide to prevent the growth of mold and mildew on the surface of that furniture. Sellers can apply new teak or worn teak furniture. The sealant is not the same as the varnish. The sealer, intended to preserve the color of the wood and is breathable, using natural oils to escape without bubbling. They serve both as protectors and stain removers. In general, the darker the dirt, the more protection it provides and often needs to be reapplied. For furniture with an old barn that is peeling, cracking or bubbling, it recommends to leave and use a tea vendor or just leave it uncovered.
Application
The application of the wood preservative is simple. In the first application, the wood should left to stand in the sun for a week or two to allow the wood grain to open. A layer of teak sealant should sprayed on and sprayed with a rag. They must use two layers in this way to all surfaces, top, bottom, sides and between spaces. The area under the furniture should protected with a cloth or newspaper because most of the sealers stain the cement. After the first application, the sealer must reapplied every year and for cleaning the wood it should done with a mild detergent and water, spray and wipe only on the surfaces that will receive sun.
After the furniture sealed, a careful level need to preserve the finish. Occasional washing with soap and water will remove dirt, grease from food, wine, coffee. To avoid this, a transparent layer of teak should applied to improve stain resistance.
Note
Teak, protected by its own natural oils that migrate to the surface of the wood and have water-impermeable fibers to the wood. As such, the use of varnishes, water or oil sealants on teak furniture, not recommended; Above all, do not use linseed oil. Products like polyurethane varnish are difficult to remove without heavy sanding. Oil will not prevent wood from turning gray, and mold often grows on furniture (which usually appears as blackheads or patches). Removing mold from the surface will require washing furniture with bleach and soap after sanding.
It seems that companies that sell teak oil promote the benefits of its use in furniture. While specialists and authorities do have a recommendation against using teak oil.
